EditDV Application Note #7

More Keyboard Tips

Naturally, for many, the mouse is easier to learn and use, at least at first,
and EditDV offers complete mouse support. A fairly efficient edit can
be done without touching the keyboard. Editors have long known,
however, that the mouse is not the ideal tool for editing video.
Keyboard control is the key to efficiency. The less time spent mousing
around, the better.

For this reason, Radius EditDV has been designed with extensive
keyboard control for maximum efficiency. The sooner you learn these
commands, the sooner you will edit video with the maximum possible
efficiency.

Learning the Shortcuts
Radius EditDV includes a keyboard reference card as an aid to learning
to use the keyboard. But the quickest way to maximize efficiency in
EditDV is to apply the key cap labels included with the package to your
keyboard.

It is amazing to us how many editors choose not to take advantage of
this tool. Editors who began working with Radius EditDV’s predecessor
many years ago are still unaware just how extensive the keyboard
support is.

Some complain that the labels are confusing when the system is used
with other applications. There is a solution to this, if you’re serious
about getting a lot of work done in EditDV.

Multiple Keyboards
The Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) allows you to daisychain several input
devices. It is often very simple to add a second keyboard to your system
so that you have one labeled keyboard for editing, and one without for
everything else.

All you need is a second keyboard with one ADB cable and one free
ADB socket.

1. Shut down your system.

2. Disconnect your existing keyboard cable.

3. Connect it to the ADB socket on your extra keyboard.

4. Connect your second keyboard’s cable to the connector that you
took your first keyboard’s cable out of.

5. Start up your system.

That’s really all there is to it. Both keyboards are active at the same
time, so be sure that you don’t set anything on the keyboard that you
are not using, or the results can be unpredictable.
